Georgia is against Olympic Games-2014 boycott in Sochi!

The winter Olympic Games of 2014 in Sochi is the global event. And, though say that sports is out of policy, unfortunately, we most often observe the return. It seems, it is clear to all for a long time that no boycott is able to belittle value of the Olympic Games, but every time there is someone who tries to convince the whole world of the strange correctness …

Last example: 28 thousand people in Georgia put the signatures under the petition with an appeal to boycott the winter Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi. Speeches sounded corresponding and directly at the National Olympic Committee building:

- We, citizens of Georgia, students, representatives of various non-governmental organizations gathered to record our position in connection with the Sochi Olympic Games. We supported this protest with signatures of our citizens under the corresponding petition. We want to show what number of citizens is against our participation in the Sochi Olympic Games … We don’t stop on it…

But to stop that who doesn’t like the ancient slogan: «Oh, sports, you are the world! «, it would be necessary after all! The president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach publicly urged all states to refuse idea of boycott of the Olympic Games. Also he told about it not somewhere, but at United Nations General Assembly meeting.

Thomas Bach emphasized:

- Sports support the dialogue and understanding which erase all sides … We never condemn and we don’t exclude someone. For this reason we are against any boycotts. Boycotts fundamentally contradict the spirit of sports, deprive the opportunity to continue to work for the benefit of the world, mutual understanding and solidarity.

The president of Georgia Georgy Margvelashvili for certain considered everything pros and cons when made the statement that he doesn’t see sense in boycott of the Olympic Games by Georgia in Sochi:

- When we made the decision that our athletes will take part in the Olympic Games, we paid a tribute of respect to the Olympic process … I hope these Olympic Games will take place in a quiet situation.

Names of athletes who will present the republic at the games to Sochi are already known also. This is the known figure skater Elena Guedevanishvili, the bronze prize-winner of two European championships and mountain skiers Nino Ziclauri, Yason Abramashvili, Alexi Beniaidze. Nino Ziclauri will incur the flag of the country at the opening ceremony.

The prime minister Irakli Garibashvili told about participation of the Georgian athletes in competitions and who didn’t fail to notice also that only athletes and official delegation of NOC of Georgia will go to the Olympic Games:

- Despite occupation, we already took the first steps in the sphere of the trade, economic and cultural relations with Russia, the work in this direction is continued. In this context I can tell that our athletes will take part in the Olympic competitions as sports have to be free.

Later the premier made one more important statement at a press conference to which the experts in safety and fight against terrorism problems paid attention:

- Safety issues are very important, we are obliged to cooperate with all countries on this matter, including Russia. If Georgia is able to make the contribution to providing and safety strengthening during the Olympic Games we would be glad.

It is necessary to tell that it is just that case when the opinion of the people and opinion of the power coincide. As sociological research in Georgia about the mood of people was conducted after all by National Democratic Institute of the USA which is difficult for suspecting of the pro-Russian sympathies. But its verdict is as follows: two thirds of citizens of Georgia support that the Georgian athletes take part at the Olympic Games in Sochi. And only 17% expressed against … The Georgian mass media reported that on the basis of representative selection 3 thousand 915 people were interrogated by direct interviewing, thus the error makes 2%. So, it is possible to trust!

And one more stroke: the same Georgian mass media published news which couldn’t be not very long ago published in any way. And it is a question that the Russian astronaut Fedor Yurchikhin returned from space to Earth and transferred to representatives of the organizing committee the Olympic torch which visited an orbit! What does it have to do with Georgia? It appears, Fedor Yurchikhin was born in Batumi … This fact is certainly pleasant to Georgians. And it is even more pleasant that now it is possible to tell about it!
