Partners of Georgia in military cooperation are called
The Minister of Defence of Georgia Irakli Alasania spoke on a number of the questions concerning the national security of Georgia and policy of military cooperation with a number of the countries. Words of the Minister of Defence of Georgia rather accurately reflect a course which not in words, but in practice carries out the government of Georgia led by Bidzina Ivanishvili.
Here is about what the minister told:
- Time came to create a tripartite format of cooperation from the point of view of the military industry with Azerbaijan and Turkey.
It is very interesting to us … At this stage cooperation with Azerbaijan is limited only to information exchange though, I think, over time we should work on interesting questions. Georgia and Azerbaijan face identical threats. And priorities are identical – we have to ensure safety of the oil pipeline of Baku-Tbilsi-Ceyhan, we have to ensure safety of strategic projects. For this reason, I consider that, cooperation in the sphere of defence will yield positive results from the point of view of safety of joint regional projects.
We have a close cooperation with Estonian partners. We are going to deepen cooperation with Israel. We cooperate with America generally in the sphere of doctrines and education. Besides, the Georgian and American military battle in Afghanistan, in the Province of Helmand shoulder to shoulder that is important experience for the Georgian military. We have fine relations with the American marines that develop our opportunities.
There is an agreement issued between Obama and Saakashvili on expanded military cooperation, vehicles of armed forces, park of helicopters. This agreement in force also moves ahead. At this stage we don't think of acquisition of other equipment.
Alasania also spoke about the relations of Georgia and Russia:
- In long-term prospect Russia needs the stable neighbor in the south – united Georgia which can be trusted. For this purpose five, seven or 15 years can be necessary … A lot of things depend on us though there are some factors which we can't supervise.
