Zurab Todua: “McCain's visit rejected any masking!”

Quite recently Moldova was visited by group of the American senators led by well-known John McCain. Visit was undertaken during a sharp phase of crisis in Ukraine, and it is hardly possible to call this coincidence casual. In this respect the deputy of Parliament of Moldova from Party of communists of the Republic of Moldova, the known historian and the political scientist Zurab Todua shared the reasons with a portal «The world and we».

- Visit of such odious politician Russophobe as John McCain, in a present situation it is possible to estimate as an accurate and concrete signal which was given by the Coalition of the Pro-European Policy (CPEP) ruling in Moldova to the West and Russia. Essence of this signal is in the following: Moldova moves in a waterway of policy of EU and the USA, including concerning such complex problem as political crisis (statehood crisis) in Ukraine.

The leadership of the Republic of Moldova refused to take a reserved position according to Ukraine. On the contrary, the members of the coalition at different levels speak about the need openly to support the West even contrary to the neutral status of the country. Thus the ruling group completely ignores that circumstance that demonstrative support of EU and the USA in the Ukrainian crisis can cause serious damage to economic and political interests of Moldova. The matter is that to the share of Russia falls from 50 to 80% of the Moldavian export. Moldova 100% depends on supply of gas from Russia (all attempts to organize alternative deliveries appeared fiction) and about 700 thousand citizens of RM are on earnings in Russia.

Before recent time, the management of RM tried though somehow to maneuvre. Charges of a frank westernized position parried, referring to preservation of «friendly» relations with Russia. The accession to sanctions of a check point justified the pressure from EU and the USA: they supposedly give the credits, grants, give political support, and in reply demand to support the position concerning Ukraine.

During and after John McCain’s visit any masking was rejected. Representatives of ruling group began to resort to aggressive rhetoric. The prime minister Yury Lyanke and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Natalya Hermann started talking about strategic cooperation with the USA in the field of safety. In turn McCain assured the interlocutors of Kishinev that the USA will give military help to Moldova in case of military invasion from Russia.

McCain’s visit was a peculiar answer to the recent statement of the Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov that «Russia supports the special status of Transnistria in uniform sovereign and neutral Moldova».

Meanwhile the neutral status of Moldova is under the threat though it is stated in the Constitution camps. The opposition Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) suggests to fix it by the special law. The ruling coalition refuses to make it the third year in a row. PCRM considers that exactly the neutral status of Moldova could ensure safety, especially if to consider that for the last 60 years, no one neutral state suffered as a result of external invasion.

The leadership of Moldova in accuracy repeats a bitter experiment which Georgia and Ukraine had before it. It is possible to note that the situation in the region even more becomes complicated not least because of unreasoned policy of the Coalition of the Pro-European Policy. The West uses Moldova as a pawn in the game against Russia, in the same way, as earlier used Georgia and Ukraine.

The situation in Moldova and round it can change in the fall, after the next parliamentary elections. It isn’t excluded that on these elections the party of ruling coalition will suffer defeat (in particular, all last sociological polls specify on it). The Coalition of the Pro-European Policy and their western patrons are afraid of it. In this regard the Coalition of the Pro-European Policy thinks over preservation options of the authorities at any outcome of elections under a pretext «preservations of the European vector of development of Moldova».

This situation confers special responsibility on PKRM. The Moldavian communists should think not only of the future election campaign and a set of other questions, but also of that the right coalition because of the avidity, adventurism, political short-sightedness and unilateral westernized orientation didn’t cast Moldova into the abyss of deep political crisis. In the same way as it occurred in Ukraine because of irresponsibility of the Ukrainian political elite.

Especially as, unfortunately, there is a lot of general between Ukraine and Moldova: deep distinctions between regions, society split in relation to a question of integration (East-West), total corruption in the highest echelons of power and others, and to crown it all — not settled territorial conflict in Transnistria.
